Presbyterian minister calls for Northern Ireland co-operation 'before it's too late'

Rev Latimer spoken at the funeral (pictured below) of peacemaker Brendan Duddy at St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry Londonderry on Monday.

The minister from First Derry Presbyterian Church said: "We have suffered together and felt pain together, we now need to move forward together - for we all belong to this place.

"There can be no going back because we have come too far. Work together before it is too late."

Rev Latimer's comments come as uncertainty grips Northern Ireland following the collapse of political power sharing at Stormont earlier this year.

The devolved government failed after the Democratic Unionists clashed over a botched green energy initiative which is expected to be significantly over-budget.

Rev Latimer also paid tribute to Brendan Duddy who worked during the Troubles to promote dialogue between the British government and the IRA which eventually led to the Good Friday peace agreement.

Duddy died on Friday at the age of 80.

Attacks occurred regularly in First Derry during the Troubles. Missiles were sometimes launched and paint bombs thrown.

In a predominantly nationalist area, Rev Latimer has been a force for reconciliation and spoken openly about being friends with the late Sinn Fein leader Martin McGuinness.
