Police say the incident happened at just after 5pm on Friday in the Priestpopple area of Hexham.

A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

In a post on social media, the Methodist Church is asking people to 'pause and pray for the families of all involved in this dreadful incident. We pray also for our Ministers and youth workers based in Hexham.'

Also on social media, Hexham Abbey posted a picture of a candle and said : 'The Rector and community at Hexham Abbey are devastated by the shocking death of one of our young people.

'We have made space available in the Abbey for anyone who wishes to come and light a candle and reflect on this terrible tragedy.

'We will be holding in our prayers all those whose lives have been shattered by this tragic event.'

Ch Supt Sam Rennison described the girl's death as a "tragedy" and said her family was "devastated beyond words".
