Speaking at the International Conference on Vocations he said bishops have to "have a shrewd and cautious look," at who will take up a position of power.

The body works to encourage more people to take up priesthood.

He stressed that priests should be "intrepid and generous, capable of closeness, listening and mercy."

Catholic News Agency has reported that the Argentinian leader said the quality of those coming forward is more important than the numbers.

He told gathered members that faith cannot be reduced to a list of rules and regulations but needs to be way of life which inspires others to learn more about Jesus, according to Vatican Radio.

Pope Francis emphasised that pastors need to learn how to imitate Jesus' way of engaging people, not with long lectures, but by inviting others to ask questions and help share their faith journey.
