Addressing thousands of pilgrims gathered in St Peter's Square for the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis highlighted the merits of baptism.
"The baptismal font illuminates all of our life, guiding our steps toward the Jerusalem in Heaven," he said.
"Even children, from antiquity onwards are baptized into the faith of their parents. Don't put off baptising your children with the excuse that he or she is unable to understand."
The pontiff said doing so would indicate "you do not trust in the Holy Spirit".
He encouraged everyone to remember the day they were baptised as it marks "the day the Holy Spirit entered into our lives" and "it is our second birthday - our rebirth."
The pontiff also said the baptismal promises that are renewed by Catholics every year in the Easter Vigil should be reaffirmed every day.
