The Holy See Press Office says he will travel on 20th September and visit the birthplace of St Francis.
St Francis of Assisi was an Italian Roman Catholic preacher and a friar.
He is one of the most well-respected religious figures and was canonised in 1228.
St Francis was known as the Patron saint of Italy and is also associated with patronage of animals and the natural environment.
The trip will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace.
It is an annual event promoted by the St Egidio Community.
The pontiff went on a private pilgrimage to Assisi earlier in August to visit the Porziuncola chapel, to mark the 800th anniversary of the "Pardon of Assisi."
