A culture of conflict, people wanting to be free of obligations to others and short-sightedness was ruining traditional family and marriage, he said.
The Holy Father recently convened Catholic priests for an Extraordinary Synod regarding family and marriage.
Divorcees taking communion and homosexuality were the most contentious topics of the convention.
According to The Catholic Herald, Pope Francis said: "Talking about problems of the family, for example, bonds are being destroyed, instead of created.
"Why? Because we are living in a culture of the provisional, of conflict, of the inability to make alliances.
"The Christian family, the family, marriage have never been attacked as much as they are right now."
Pope Francis also encouraged the members to see marriage as a union between two people before God for eternity, and not just as an event.
