Plane crash will have wider effects in Egypt, warns Christian Lord

by Hannah Tooley

British and American officials say that it was possible that a bomb on board a flight on Saturday brought down the Russian Airbus A321-200.

It crashed 23 minutes after take-off from the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 people on board.

Lord Alton of Liverpool, Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Egypt told Premier that if the county's second largest industry is damaged then: "Funds are not going into Egypt, then the more likely those people will be susceptible to the enticements of terrorist organisations like ISIS, who exploit grievance, poverty and destitution.

"So these things all play into one another.

"And although I personally believe that the Egyptian president is trying to make real progress on things like human rights and political freedoms, which are the essential foundations for long term stability, he also has to build up long-term hope in the country otherwise these people will fall into the hands of ISIS."

It has been reported that only eight flights will depart from Sharm el-Sheikh for the UK over the course of Friday, rather than the 29 initially expected, the country's authorities have said.

Egypt's civil aviation minister said the volume of luggage being left behind by British passengers, who have been told they cannot take suitcases in the holds of planes, has disrupted operations at the airport.

Vladimir Putin has also agreed to suspend all Russian flights to Egypt after a recommendation by his intelligence chief until the cause of last week's crash is determined.

The Russian suspension, covering all of Egypt, is even more sweeping than that imposed by Britain, which has halted flights to Sharm el-Sheikh only.
