Five officers were killed and seven injured by sniper fire in coordinated attacks overnight.
Three people were detained - and one suspect killed when officers used a robot bomb to end a lengthy stand-off.
One of the gunmen who opened fire in Dallas last night reportedly wanted to kill white police officers.
Speaking to Premier, Pete Briscoe called on his city and country to push forward and improve race relations.
He said: "If you can get below the white and black you will find red.
"It doesn't matter what our skin colour is - if there's innocent blood being shed it's horrific, it's awful and it needs to be corrected.
"We need to figure something out because this isn't working.
"We know the solution is Christ and we need to figure out how to see him come to bare in this situation."
The attacks happened during a Black Lives Matter protest.
The demonstration followed the fatal shootings of two black men in as many days by police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota.
Sharon Gyger's from 90.9 KCBI, a Christian talk radio station in Dallas, told Premier there haven't been many Black Lives Matter protests there in the past.
She said: "This is one of the first major ones.
"The idea behind this protest was to demonstrate peacefully.
I don't think there was any intent on the part of the organisers for anything like this to occur."
She said Dallas is struggling to deal with what has happened.
"Our city is stunned and we are in shock.
"People are reacting in fear. What we are seeing in the United States - the roots of it - are far behind political or racial. They are spiritual."
