Pakistani court grants Christian woman right to change religious ID

by Lydia Davies

After a 15-year struggle, a Christian woman in Pakistan has won the right to have her faith accurately reflected on her national identity card.

The unnamed woman, who converted from Islam to Christianity in 2009 and later married a Christian man, had faced repeated refusals by officials at the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to amend her religious designation.

Despite providing baptism and marriage certificates and birth documents for her five children, she was met with threats and denial.

Her lawyer, Lazar Allah Rakha told Morning Star News that she was “thrilled” after the Lahore High Court ruled on 1st July that NADRA must issue her a corrected identity card, declaring her previous faith listing a “mistaken entry.”

Backed by Christian Solidarity International, the woman took her case to court after exhausting all other options.

The years-long issue had made it difficult for the family to obtain official documents for their children and access basic services.

“There is no specific law in Pakistan that criminalises apostasy," Rakha noted, “but converts often face danger under blasphemy laws and the threat of violence, which is why many choose to keep their faith hidden".

Under current CNIC policy, converts to Islam can amend their religion, but Muslims are not permitted to change their faith status.

Pakistan ranks 8th on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of the most dangerous countries to be a Christian.
