One dead and churches burned in Nigerian village

by Hannah Tooley

According to anti-persecution charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) the attacks took place the end of May and armed Fulani herdsmen are behind the arson and death.

Reports from the area suggest that herdsmen attacked the village around 2am in late May, targeting homes and churches including Tawaliu Baptist Church and the Evangelical Church Winning All.

Joshua Billa, who was in his early 30s, was killed in the surprise attack.

Some villagers are still sheltering in a primary school protected by security services and others have fled for nearby villages.

Assaults in the region have been going on for years between rival groups.

Earlier in the year Muslims Against Terror condemned the killings by herdsmen and it called for the perpetrators to be named as terrorists and for the government to "deal with them with the full power of the military."

Mervyn Thomas, Chief Executive of CSW, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ninte village, who have lost loved ones and homes in the latest bout of violence in Sanga LGA.

"The continuing absence of an effective and balanced security response to herder-related violence is disheartening and has clearly served to embolden perpetrators, enabling the violence to spread across the country.

"We call on Federal and State authorities to urgently address this threat to national security and unity."

"Murder, rape, and destruction of property must be viewed as crimes under the law and addressed accordingly regardless of the tribe, creed or occupation of the perpetrators."
