Number of US hotels providing Bibles in rooms halves in a decade

The survey, conducted by analytics company STR, found that the percentage of hotels in the US providing copies of the Bible in rooms has dropped from 95 per cent in 2006 to 48 per cent in 2016.

The reasons for the change, according to STR analyists, included the need to appeal to young travellers who are not interested in religion and to avoid offending non-Christians.

In the UK, Travelodge removed Bibles from hotel rooms in 2007.

Defending the decision to The Blaze in 2014, a Travelodge spokesperson said: "In order not to discriminate against any religion, customers who would like a Bible can pick a copy from any one of Travelodge's 500 hotel reception desks across the country, whilst staying at the hotel."

Bibles first appeared on hotel nightstands in the UK in 1888. They were provided by the Commercial Travellers' Christian Association.

Now the biggest supplier of hotel Bibles is the Gideon Society.
