'No progress' on Christian persecution in Nigeria

by Antony Bushfield

Boko Haram militants have killed thousands of Christians as they advance across Northern Nigeria.

Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama warned the world must do more to halt the group's progress.

He said: "There are so many thousands of displace people who are taking refuge in the cathedral premises in Yola and then the Bishop of Magaduiri will tell you how many parishes have been closed because people have been displaced and the villages taken over by Boko Haram."

In April the extremist group kidnapped more than 200 mostly Christian school girls from their classroom in Chibok.

Archbishop Kaigama told Premier he wanted other religious leaders to speak out more.

"Nigeria gets mentioned now and again but the situation just continues to deteriorate," he said.

"That [fight against Boko Haram] needs to be kept alive. The fact that the girls are still missing, the fact that villages are taken over."
