Borussia Dortmund player Felix Nmecha has celebrated a stunning bicycle kick goal by giving God the glory.
Scoring in the 89th minute to secure a Bundesliga win on Saturday, the Christian midfielder acted out the motion of laying an invisible crown down at the foot of the cross.
The ‘Crowns Down’ celebration was created by footballers, as part of the King’s Return movement for the World Cup. It signals that the crown belongs to Jesus, with players using the movement to share how the Christian hope of his return changes how they live and play.
After the 3-0 victory against SC Paderborn, the 25 year-old posted on Instagram: “For his glory”. His bio on the social media site reads: “Football is my passion, Jesus is my foundation”.
Nmecha came off the bench to score twice within ten minutes, his first goals of the new season. It comes after the World Cup in which he hit the headlines for pointing back to Christ. He was one of the players who visibly prayed on the pitch with the opposition, including after Germany’s 7-1 win over Curacao.
He told ESPN: “During the game we're opponents, but after the game we’re Christians, so we’re brothers. We want to see Jesus glorified through the game.”
