Nigeria church shooting suspects arrested

by Sophie Drew

Suspects have been arrested in connection with the Owo church shooting that saw at least 40 people killed in the Ondo State of Nigeria.

The attack took place at the St Francis Church at around 11.30am on Pentecost Sunday, 5th of June.

Detonating explosive devices outside the church, the perpetrators fired indiscriminately at worshippers reciting the Lord's prayer.

Worshippers raced to the two alternative exits where they were met with more attackers, and more explosions.

The church - which can hold up to 1,200 people, was full when the assailants launched their attack.

The Nigerian authorities have not announced how many suspects have been detained.

Ondo State Amotekun commander, Adetunji Adeleye, said: "As regards the Owo incident, we have recovered the last vehicle they used for that operation and we made some arrests and we have also recovered some vital things which we are working on.

"A number of people have been arrested concerning the Owo issue as well as well number of equipment. On that day, we pursued them to the point that we recovered the vehicle and we are still pursuing them. We have told you that until we get to the root, I can assure you that the perpetrators and their sponsors will be brought to book."
