Christian band Newsboys have been dropped by their record label following mounting backlash over allegations involving former lead singer Michael Tait.
The announcement was made by current frontman Adam Agee during a live show at the Elevate Music Festival in Arizona on Sunday.
He told the crowd: “As a result of all this and the things that have come out that (Tait’s) done and he’s confessed to, we’ve been dropped from our record label. We’ve had radio stations pull our music. We’ve been cancelled by promoters and venues all over the world.”
Tait, who left the band in November, reportedly confessed in January to living “a double life” and stepped down to seek help.
In recent weeks, multiple reports have emerged accusing him of serious misconduct, including sexual abuse and substance misuse.
The Newsboys’ recent album release has been overshadowed by the scandal, and several Christian festivals, including Kingdom Bound Festival, have since pulled them from their line-ups.
The Christian music community remains divided in its response, with Cory Asbury claiming “everyone knew", while Rend Collective’s Chris Llewelyn called for reform in the CCM industry.
He said: “I want to see an end to the parts of CCM that tolerated and incubated this abuse. But I also want people to continue to hear good news about a God who loves them.”
