Mother slams textbook promoting 'Islamic propaganda' for her Christian daughter

Michelle Edmisten from the Sullivan County in the US state of Tennessee has now filed a formal complaint to the school district.

She said: "I will continue this fight, and I hope and I pray that somebody somewhere will see my heart and understand this goes far beyond textsbooks ...this is our state ...this is our government ...we have got to put our foot down."

Edmisten, a founder of the Facebook group Sullivan County Parents Against Islam Indoctrination, first raised concerns over the My World History - published by UK-based Pearson - in October 2016.

Her opposition arose after her daughter was asked in an assignment questions about the five pillars of Islam and Islam's holy book.

The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAS) said it was preparing a letter of protest in the event the textbook was withdrawn from the curriculem.

It said: "The Sullivan County controversy sadly reflects larger efforts to purge lessons on Islam from schools in Tennessee.

"The proposed currciulum, which is undergoing public review, has removed information on the history and spread of Islam, the life and teachings of Mohammad, and the study of Islamic art."

Pearson told the Guardian newspaper they have offered to speak directly with concerned groups in Tennessee and said their resources are created "to meet the academic guidelines set by individual states."

It's understood the principal of the school concerned has 15 days to establish a committee to review whether the textbook is in keeping with the curriculem, before recommending a course of action to the headteacher.
