The famous sister founded Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) in a monastery garage in 1981, which now broadcasts daily to more than 250 million people around the world.
Born Rita Rizzo to a poor family in Canton, Ohio in 1923, she said she decided to become a nun when God healed her of severe recurring stomach pain.
She joined the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration in Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 21 in 1943, where she took on the name Mother Angelica.
Mother Angelica later founded a new monastery in Birmingham, Alabama, which became the main seat of her non-media ministry.
Recording her first radio programme in 1971, God led her to start EWTN ten years later after she decided to stop broadcasting with a secular network which she believed was distributing blasphemous content.
EWTN Chairman and Chief Executive Michael Warsaw said: "Mother has always and will always personify EWTN, the network that God asked her to found.
"Her accomplishments and legacies in evangelization throughout the world are nothing short of miraculous and can only be attributed to divine Providence and her unwavering faithfulness to Our Lord.
"In the face of sickness and long-suffering trials, Mother's example of joy and prayerful perseverance exemplified the Franciscan spirit she held so dear."
