Mob attacks Christian homes in Egyptian village

by Lydia Davies

Anti-Christian violence has broken out in the village of Nazlat Jalf in Egypt’s Minya province, after rumours circulated online about a relationship between a young Christian man and a Muslim girl.

A mob reportedly attacked Christian homes with stones and fire, damaging property and issuing threats, though no injuries have been reported.

Police have arrested some of those involved, but Christian Solidarity Worldwide says local authorities have again pushed for a “reconciliation session” instead of proper legal action.

CSW CEO Scot Bower said: “Sectarian attacks are not only assaults on innocent people; they also undermine the fundamental rights and human dignity that should be enjoyed by every citizen,” adding that authorities must tackle hate speech and hold perpetrators accountable.
