Fr Francesco Convertini life in the west Indian Diocese of Krishnagar for more than four decades, during which the Partition of India and subsequent split of Pakistan and Bangladesh took place.
Speaking about the Italian Salesian priest, state-run Vatican Radio said: "Throughout his life, he was able to accept others and meet people with his heart, goodness and humanity."
"He gave himself to all equally: Muslims, Hindus and Christians."
Fr Convertini is one of eight people - seven men and one woman - announced by the Holy See at the weekend as receiving the title of "Venerable Servant of God".
Born near Bari on 29th August 1898, Fr Convertini was called up for military service during the First World War, before he was captured and taken to Poland.
After his return to Italy, he left Genoa, arriving in the northeastern India state of Assam in 1927.
Following his ordination as a priest in June 1935, he was sent to the poor Diocese of Krishnagar in Bengal where he lived until his death on 11th February 1976.
Fr Convertini - who has been attributed with numerous miraculous event - would travel by horseback, bicycle or foot from village to village talking to people about Jesus Christ.
Having had the title "Venerable Servant of God" conferred upon him, the next step towards canonisation is being beatified and named "Blessed".
