Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel comes to Hull

Officially licensed by the Vatican Museums, "Michelangelo - A Different View" will display reproductions of Michelangelo's world-famous paintings for visitors to view up close, at Hull Minster Holy Trinity Parish Church.

A series of high resolution photographs of the Sistine frescoes have been transferred onto special fabric to create high-definition display panels that retain the colour and detail of the artwork.

The "Creation of Adam" - a depiction of God giving life to the first man and "The Last Judgement", which covers the whole of the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, are set to be amongst the works on display.

Curate Eve Ridgeway told Premier the exhibition will allow visitors to absorb the paintings in detail in a less busy environment, whilst maintaining a worship setting.

She said: "There's images of Genesis to Revelation and you will be able to walk through and be up close and personal with them and experience them in a whole new way."

"It allows a true to life reproduction of the paintings and gives visitors that close-up view that is otherwise impossible in the Sistine chapel."

Exhibition 4 You (E4Y), the company who came up with the concept, say they want to give visitors a unique perspective on Michelangelo's work and provide an opportunity for both reflection and discussion, without restrictions.

Bishop Frank White, Interim Minister of Hull Minster, said: "It's a very great privilege for Hull Minster to host an exhibition of such celebrated artwork, which can usually only be viewed in Rome.

"It's also wonderful that a building as ancient as the Minster is able to host an exhibition of paintings which hold a timeless and universal appeal. It represents a coming together of key expressions of Christian faith through art."

Hull Minster will host the exhibition, free of charge from October 8th to November 18th 2019.
