Mexico Epiphany marked by deadly unrest over fuel prices

A policeman and a bystander died amid the rioting, which saw more than 700 people arrested and 300 shops ransacked on the last day parents could complete last minute gift buying before the holiday.

Young children are traditionally left Christmas presents inside or by their shoes on Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, in a nod to the Magi who travelled from the East bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus.

The protests and lootings are triggered by an announcement at the weekend that fuel prices in Mexico would rise as part of a deregulation strategy.

Supplies of basic goods and fuels were threatened and many stores and firms were forced to close, because of the looting this week and blockades on highways and ports, according to the country's business chambers.

The deregulation of the energy sector will see fuel subsidies withdrawn and the cost of fuel determined by international prices.

In a televised address to the nation President Enrique Pena Nieto said, while acknowledging the resentment, he would push ahead with deregulating petrol prices.

"I know that allowing gasoline to rise to its international price is a difficult change, but as president, my job is to precisely make difficult decisions now, in order to avoid worse consequences in the future."

"Keeping gas prices artificially low would mean taking money away from the poorest Mexicans, and giving it to those who have the most."
