A “freak accident” in Ohio, left a church member dead and a pastor in critical condition.

The tragic event occurred on the evening of 17th April 2025, after a tree and power lines suddenly collapsed onto their vehicle while returning from a Bible study.

Richard Miller, 35, tragically died on the scene, while Pastor Andrew Edwards III, who was driving, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

The incident took place just before 9 p.m, following a Bible study at Northwest Baptist Church on West Alexis Road, as reported by The Christian Post.

Emergency responders reported that the unexpected fall of a tree combined with downed power lines resulted in the devastating crash.

Pastor Edwards had just dropped off another congregant when the tree struck the vehicle.

Miller, who had been a regular member of the church, was killed instantly.

Edwards, though critically injured, is stable and responsive.

"Pastor Edwards is in critical care, but he is stable and responsive and has movement in all extremities," a statement from Northwest Baptist Church read.

The pastor suffered significant injuries, including fractures to his clavicle, sternum, and a vertebra in his back, along with a minor brain bleed that doctors continue to monitor closely.

Two other vehicles were damaged by the falling tree but no one in those vehicles was injured.

Church officials have asked for prayers for both families.

"As hard as this is to believe and share, Bro Richard was taken home to be with the Lord," the church posted on social media.

They also encouraged financial support for the families during this tragic time, with all donations going directly to assist with funeral and medical expenses.

Local officials, including Toledo Councilman Melden, noted that the tree had fallen from private property, and there were no previous reports of concerns regarding its safety.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the collapse.

“We ask for your prayers for comfort and healing,” the church’s statement concluded.
