Kmart customers were outraged after 'Bible', 'church', and 'Jesus' were not allowed to be used in captions and were replaced with asterisks, deeming the words profanity.
Kodak, which owns the kiosks, said it recently installed software to spot profanity and what happened on Monday was a malfunction of the software.
A spokesman for Kmart said: 'We would like to sincerely apologise for this system error, which has been rectified overnight. It in no way reflects our views as a business."
The words 'Jewish' and 'Allah' were also banned in the system error, as well as non-religious words such as 'Canadian'.
