Lost star to play Jesus in new TV show

by Hannah Tooley

He will play the Son of God in American Gods, a show that looks at Gods from different cultures and periods of history, including Egyptian Gods.

According to Flickering Myth, it is based on Neil Gaiman's Nebula Award-winning novel, and Jesus is portrayed wearing a baseball cap with a beard, sharing his view of what it means to be a God.

The combination of religious and ancient Gods throws up tension between the characters.

For example Jesus' character is said to be okay with sharing Easter with an accidental idol.

"Resurrected on Ostara's feast day, Jesus has always been generous in sharing the Easter holiday with the ancient goddess [Easter, played by Kristin Chenoweth].

"But the overly empathetic Son of God would be crushed to know that Ostara harbours some deeply buried resentment over the issue," reads the character description.

The show also investigates people's worshipping of so-called 'modern Gods' like money, smartphones and celebrity culture.

It will be aired on US channel Starz in 2017 and storylines centre on themes like sacrifice and tributes.
