London mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan "a really dear friend" of Christian wing of the Labour Party

by Aaron James

The Christian wing of the Labour Party is speaking after Mr Khan won the contest to be Labour's London mayoral candidate for next year's election, beating hot favourite Dame Tessa Jowell with 59% percent of the vote.

Mr Khan has said: "Like so many Londoners, I owe London everything. And looking to the future, our burning ambition must to ensure that all Londoners have the same opportunities.

"It's this that will underpin our campaign to win back City Hall."

He is a practising Muslim and has lived in Tooting all his life, growing up on a council estate as one of eight children.

In terms of policy, he is notable for being outspoken about London's lack of affordable housing, and for changing his mind on Heathrow's third runway. He now opposes expansion at the airport and will be campaigning against it.

Andy Flanagan, director of Christians on the Left, told Premier's News Hour: "I'm really pleased. I know Sadiq well, a wonderful guy who I think will serve Londoners really really well.

"For years now he's been a really dear friend of Christians on the Left, popping up at various events, clapping along when the worship is happening and really enjoying actually being involved.

Asked what Sadiq Khan would bring which the other candidates wouldn't, Mr Flanagan said: "I think a belief in people. Because of Sadiq's story especially, of having grown up on a council estate in London and having got to where he has got to now, I think there's an inspiration behind that.

"I think there's a reality that folks who describe themselves as normal Londoners need some stories of inspiration at the minute."
