Lettuce pray: Christian farmers concerned about veg shortage

Some supermarkets, including Morrisons and Tesco, are even rationing the amount of some vegetables customers are allowed to buy.

Tesco is limiting customers to three iceberg lettuces and Morrisons has put the limit at two lettuces and three heads of broccoli.

The vegetable shortage has been blamed on poor growing conditions in Italy and Spain.

Parts of Spain have experienced the heaviest rainfall in 30 years. This has coincided with a cold snap in Italy.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, Chairman of the Agricultural Christian Fellowship John Plumb said it is time to rethink how we eat.

"We should stand back, look at the big picture and say 'is it right to be always importing everything on demand?' because there are other things we could be eating at this time," Plumb said.

He added that British farmers are starting to harvest cauliflower, cabbage and Brussel sprouts and that they "are alternatives we should be eating when they are fresh and available."
