Rapper Kanye West has doubled down on his pro-life position, insisting that the world should "cry about" abortion. The tweet comes two weeks after West — who is making a last-minute bid for President of the United States — hosted an emotional campaign rally during which he revealed that he and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, came close to aborting their daughter.
"I almost killed my daughter!" he screamed at the highly-publicised event, bursting into floods of tears.
Kanye's emotional state caused many to suspect he may be going through a period of mental ill-health - he has previously opened up about his diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Following up on the event with today's tweet, West, who has spoken openly about his Christian faith in recent years, insisted that abortion is a subject that the world should be weeping about.
He wrote: "I cried at the thought of aborting my first born and everyone was so concerned about me... I’m concerned for the world that feels you shouldn’t cry about this subject."
Many pro-life campaigners responded to West with words of agreement. "We are too. Thank you for standing for life, Kanye," wrote US pro-life organisation, Live Action. "Who wouldn’t cry at the thought of their child not existing," another added.
Others disagreed. "Her body her right!" one Twitter user replied. "You’re a billionaire who has resources to provide a great quality of life for your children. Most aren’t that fortunate. You shouldn’t speak on women’s reproductive issues. It doesn’t concern you!!!"
Following his campaign rally, West publicly apologised for "going public with something that was a private matter".
"I did not cover her like she has covered me," he added. "To Kim I want to say I know I hurt you. Please forgive me. Thank you for always being there for me."
