On Sunday, 13th October 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris was described as a “phenomenal servant of God” by Bishop Rosie O'Neal, the founder and senior pastor of Koinonia Christian Centre Church in Greenville, North Carolina, before Harris took to the stage.
Speaking to the congregation, Harris encouraged them not to grow weary in doing good, drawing from Galatians 6.
As the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris, who is seeking to become the first female president of the United States, highlighted the challenges of maintaining faith during times of crisis.
According to The Christian Post, she specifically referenced the recent devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in states like North Carolina and Florida.
The hurricanes caused billions of dollars in damage and claimed numerous lives, especially in western North Carolina, located five hours from where Harris was speaking.
“It’s easy in these moments of crisis to question our faith or even lose it temporarily because of what we see,” she said.
“It does my heart and soul good.”
Harris reflected on her early experiences with faith, sharing memories of singing in the children’s choir at the 23rd Avenue Church of God in Oakland, California. Quoting Galatians, she said: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
She emphasised that faith is more than belief, saying: "Faith is a verb, something shown through action."
Harris also referenced her childhood pastor, Rev Amos C. Brown of Third Baptist Church in San Francisco, who often quoted Micah 6:8: “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.”
Harris stated that these teachings are especially relevant during difficult times, such as the recent hurricanes.
Harris concluded by reflecting on Paul’s message in Galatians, reminding the congregation that even in difficult times, God calls everyone to continue doing good. “Each of us has the power to make a difference,” she said. “And the measure of our strength will be clear when we see what we can do to lift others up.”
