US Vice President JD Vance has acknowledged that he still has doubts about his Christian faith, while saying he is more confident in the existence of God than at any other point in his life.
Speaking to evangelist Bryce Crawford, Vance said he would rate his confidence that he will go to heaven at around seven or eight out of 10.
“I’m always one of these people who is always going to have little doubts,” Vance said.
The vice president said his confidence had increased from around five or six a year earlier, but explained that his doubts centre on whether Christianity is ultimately true rather than whether he has done enough to earn salvation.
“I still occasionally have doubts. Like is this actually real?” he said.
Vance nevertheless affirmed his belief in Jesus Christ as his Saviour.
“Believe in Jesus Christ. I believe he’s my savior,” he said, adding that he tries to “walk the path of faith” and believes it “eventually leads to heaven.”
Vance also stressed that salvation is not based on human merit.
“Obviously, it’s not about what we’ve done to deserve it,” he said. “Jesus Christ is God’s sacrifice. He is the person who forgives sins.”
He said he remains uncertain about what lies beyond death, despite becoming increasingly convinced that God exists.
“I feel more confident today that God exists than I have probably at any other point in my life,” Vance said.
He said his reluctance to give a 10 reflected his desire to maintain “some humility about what I don’t know”.
“But you’re right. It’s not about us. It’s ultimately about him,” Vance said.
