Investigation into Vatican finances suspended

by Hannah Tooley

Just over four months after the external audit by one of the world's leading accounting firms began, the Secretariat of State has said that the initiative will not continue.

During the week the Vatican said there was a decision to suspend the audit, carried out by accountancy giant PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The National Catholic Register has reported the move is directed towards Cardinal George Pell's leadership of the Vatican's financial reform.

Cardinal Pell, the Vatican's finance minister from Australia, is being questioned by an Australian Royal Commission over what he knew about the sex abuse spanning decades committed by priests in the city of Ballarat in the state of Victoria.

Mr Pell denies claims he covered up their abuse during his time in Ballarat. He has never been accused of abusing children himself.

Sean MacEntee

He was appointed by Pope Francis in 2014 to head the newly created Secretariat for the Economy and to order the Vatican's money better.

In December 2015 the Vatican revealed that Pope Francis had brought in an auditing firm to help reform finances and make deals more transparent after a series of scandals.

Last year two books were published, compiled from leaked documents, that allege financial wrongdoing in the Roman Catholic Church bureaucracy.

It has resulted in the so-called Vatileaks scandal that is investigating allegations made in the books written by two Italian journalists.

Premier telephoned the Vatican, which declined to comment on this issue.
