Investigation dropped against French cardinal

by Hannah Tooley

Prosecutors have ended their investigation into Archbishop of Lyon Philippe Barbarin. They were looking into allegations that the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Lyon did not act against a priest accused of child sexual abuse.

The cardinal was questioned in June by police over the case of a priest accused of abusing boy scouts.

Fr Bernard Preynat is alleged to have abused young boys between 1986 and 1991 and the French Catholic church was accused of covering it up.

Cardinal Barbarin has denied any wrongdoing, however he has admitted that mistakes had been made.

A group called Parole liberee (Freed word) has collected witness statements which make complaints against Fr Bernard Preynat and prosecutors say that he has admitted the charges, according to the BBC.

Cardinal Barbarin did not move to the diocese of Lyon until 2002.

He says that he did not know anything about the allegations until five years later.

Speaking to the BBC earlier in the year he said: "I have never covered up any act of paedophilia."

The priest was removed from his post in 2015.

Pope Francis, who has been the leader of the Catholic Church since 2013, says he will not stand for any abuse in the Catholic Church.

He says new laws will investigate bishops who are "negligent" in dealing with priests accused of committing abuse.
