Hull Minster is preparing to stage its first passion play in generations after an “incredible” response from local people.
On Good Friday more than 40 performers will enact the events of Jesus's life, crucifixion and resurrection along streets in the city’s old town. As well as the retelling of the Easter story, the event is part of a programme of events to mark 600 years since Hull Minster was consecrated.
Parish administrator Becky Howes told the BBC there had been an “overwhelming” response from people who wanted to be involved:
“It’s so exciting, and it'll be a spectacle.
"We didn't need to do auditions because there are so many parts. We've even got two people playing Jesus, but that will help as we move around the streets.
"The most iconic part will be Jesus carrying the cross through Whitefriargate. We've made the cross; it's solid wood, and it's heavy.”
She added that she hopes people join the route and that “in other places where these plays have been, people have really got involved by getting dressed up".
"We want people to join in and add to the experience," she continued.
Passion plays will be enacted on Good Friday in communities across the UK, including at Trafalgar Square in London where a cast of more than 100 actors and volunteers, as well as horses, donkeys and doves, will come together to bring Jesus’ story to life.
The Hull Minster passion play, which is believed to be the first in the city in modern times, begins at 11am on 18th April in Trinity Square.
