Hospital missed clues Christian missionaries baby was swapped

by Hannah Tooley

British-born David Cushworth and Salvadorian-born Mercedes Casanellas were reunited with their baby son after he was swapped at birth.

They accused a doctor at the hospital of swapping their child as part of a suspected human trafficking plot, however the doctor denies this and claims it was an innocent mix up.

The hospital has been accused of failing to spot a number of factors that could have prevented the mix up, according to The Times.

DNA tests confirmed the baby they took home with them was not their child and Mrs Casanellas first raised concerns when the baby's skin seemed darker than its mother and fathers.

The couples underweight premature baby was mixed up with a baby born at full-term and they left with a baby that weighed significantly more than the infant Mrs Casanellas had given birth to.

It is reported that Mrs Casanellas had raised concerns the baby was not hers but had been reassured by hospital staff.

After they returned to their home in Texas, USA, their worries grew after friends mentioned the baby did not resemble the parents.

The gynaecologist, Dr Alejandro Guidos, is now under investigation and denies the charges.

The babies are meant to be checked at the hospital twice a day.

A doctor, speaking anonymously to The Times said that: "We're not talking about just one person's mistake, but the error of two paediatricians and four nurses."

When they were reunited with their son David Cushworth Mercedes Casanellas wrote on Facebook: "There are no words to express what our heart feels to have our baby at home! Thanks to all who joined our pain and fed our hope.

"Thank God our family has gathered, for the moment we are not allowed to upload photos but soon we'll give more details of the outcome of this miracle."

Their friends reported that they were sad to give up the other baby they had been given, Jacob, who they had looked after for a number of months.
