Hillsong NYC pastor Carl Lentz fired for 'moral failures'

by Tola Mbakwe

Pastor Carl Lentz has been fired from his position as head over Hillsong Church East Coast.

In a statement on Hillsong Church's website, Senior Pastor Brian Houston said his employment was terminated following discussions about leadership issues, breaches of trust and a recent revelation of moral failures.

He added the church will not be going into detail about the events that led to the sacking.

"This action was not taken lightly and was done in the best interests of everyone, including Pastor Carl," he said.

"We thank Pastors Carl and Laura for the way they have served faithfully and sacrificially since the start of Hillsong NYC and for contributing so significantly to the countless lives that have been transformed for Jesus Christ through this ministry.

"They have a heart for people and we are confident that after a time of rest and restoration, God will use Carl in another way outside of Hillsong church.

"In terminating his tenure, we in no way want to diminish the good work he did here."

Pastor Houston said although he knew terminating Pastor Lentz was the right decision, it's one that came with "sadness" as he's known him and his wife for more than 20 years.

The church will we selecting new leadership and its services will continue as normal.
