A Catholic organisation in Guernsey is urgently appealing for land to put ‘pod’ shelters for homeless people, whilst they find a longer-term space.
Caritas Guernsey hopes to erect two Amazing Grace Spaces pods – which are compact, solar-powered shelters containing a bed, electricity and toilet facilities which can be used to house homeless people.
The pods have been a great success in Bradford, where St Stephen’s church have placed one in their churchyard. Guests can shelter in the pod whilst seeking long-term accommodation, and are welcomed into the church building for showers and meals.
St Stephen’s have made lasting connections with the pod guests – some of whom are now permanent church members.

Caritas Guernsey says: “Too many people in Guernsey are currently without a safe place to sleep — from those sofa surfing, to individuals staying in vehicles or sleeping rough.
“We are seeking a temporary site for the pods. All we need is a flat, safe piece of land, around the size of two car parking spaces. This could be a corner of private land, a section of a car park, or any accessible outdoor area.
“We welcome suggestions from both public and private landowners — and even short-term use would make a meaningful difference.”
