Good Friday Gospel story "won't succumb" to Brussels attack fears

by Hannah Tooley

The Wintershall cast and animals will re-create their annual Passion and resurrection play of Jesus' last days in the heart of the capital, Trafalgar Square.

Charlotte de Klee has produced the Wintershall Passion Plays which will showcase on Good Friday.

She told Premier's Inspirational Breakfast they will not let the Brussels attacks stop them sharing Jesus' story.

She said that they have ensured security will be tight: "We've got the GLA's [Greater London Authority] best security firm there.

"Scotland Yard is fully aware, we understand that security's been stepped up, and we could all just stop, but actually we're going to go on."

Charlotte de Klee added that she believes hope will triumph over fear: "We just don't want to succumb to their fear - this whole feeling of fear that they put on everybody.

"We've just got to go out, and we hope we've got enough out there to protect us and I think we have."

She told Premier that during previous productions Christians from all denominations and backgrounds: "What's so amazing - we were Syrian Orthodox, we were Coptic's, we were Armenians, we were Catholics, we were Anglicans, we were Pentecostals, Baptists, Methodists - and we were all just there together.

"All of us together supporting each other in the Gospel story."

Around 2,000 people are expected to watch the Passion play over two performances at 12 noon and 3.15pm and television screens will be constructed throughout the Square.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "As Londoners across the capital and beyond celebrate Easter I am delighted that The Passion of Jesus is returning to Trafalgar Square. It is a wonderful event that brings to life the Christian message and attracts people of all faiths right in the heart of our great city."
