Gateway Church has announced it will stop holding Saturday services at most of its campuses by the end of the month, citing a need to focus on serving its congregation more effectively.
The change comes as the megachurch continues to deal with the fallout from the resignation of its founding pastor, Robert Morris, following serious sexual abuse allegations.
In a statement, the church said: “We’re making a shift at several of our DFW campuses by hosting our church services on Sundays only... This adjustment will allow us to minister to and love our congregation well while prioritising the needs of our individual campus communities.”
The church’s main campus in Southlake will continue offering both Saturday and Sunday services, along with midweek gatherings, as reported by CBS Texas.
The move follows reports of declining attendance and a drop in financial giving since Morris stepped down in 2024.
Earlier this year, church elders confirmed that tithing “has not mirrored attendance”, prompting upcoming staff layoffs and a broader restructuring.
Morris, 63, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of lewd or indecent acts with a child.
The alleged victim, Cindy Clemishire, claims Morris abused her over several years starting when she was 12.
In a recent statement, she said: “My childhood and the woman I would have become died that day in 1982. The person who abused me and the people who blatantly covered it up deserve to be held accountable.”
Morris is also suing the church for over $1 million (£730,200) in retirement payments, claiming verbal promises of annual benefits that exceed what is stated in his official compensation agreement.
Church attorneys argue that while Morris focused on securing his financial future, his alleged conduct left Gateway facing deep crisis.
