Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, has announced it is making staff layoffs in the wake of the scandal involving former pastor Robert Morris.
It has been a year since the 63-year-old stepped down from the Texas-based megachurch after being publicly accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s.
In a statement, Gateway's elders said:
“Over the past year, we've held the tension of wrestling with the pain from the challenges we have faced as a church family, while also rejoicing in all that God has done in our church.
“Over the last year, tithing has not mirrored attendance due to the ongoing issues related to the church’s former pastor, which has led to a significant drop in giving.”
The elders acknowledged that “restructuring our staffing is necessary,” and emphasized that the decision was not a reflection of the integrity or capabilities of the staff.
They added: “Every staff member has contributed in meaningful ways to God’s work through this church.”
Gateway did not disclose how much attendance or revenue has declined, nor when the staff reductions would take place.
Last year, 55-year-old Cindy Clemishire shocked the church community and beyond when she accused Morris of sexually abusing her when she was 12 years old. Morris was alleged to be 22 at the time and serving as a traveling preacher alongside his wife and children.
Following the allegations, Morris resigned from Gateway, which at the time was one of the largest megachurches in the United States, with more than 100,000 active members across multiple states.
In March of this year, prosecutors in Oklahoma charged Morris with five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child.
Morris has pleaded not guilty. His next court hearing is scheduled for September.
