Fiona Bruce MP says human rights abuses must be raised with Kim Jong Un

by Cara Bentley

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are due to meet overnight UK time on Monday and are expected to discuss denuclearisation.

However, Fiona Bruce, a Christian MP, says the mistreatment of the North Korean people by their own leaders must also be addressed by the international community.

She told Premier's News Hour these abuses were: "enslavement, torture, rape, forced abortions and persecution and even termination."

The Conservative MP for Congleton is also a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on North Korea and emphasised that it was a significant moment, saying: "This summit has the potential to be hugely important."

"We should all be hoping for a successful summit if that means that the suffering and the lives of these North Korean people could be changed for the better.

"Human rights issues have got to be tackled by the international community and I am hoping that in the course of the discussion there will be time for this issue to be raised with the leadership of North Korea.

She added she hoped it there would be a chance "for the president of the United States to say 'if we're going to have a changed relationship then that has to mean a change in North Korea's approach to human rights.'"

One of the most persecuted groups in North Korea are Christians, which Bruce also spoke about: "All the accounts that we have are that Christians suffer the most. They suffer the most in prison camps, they are treated as political prisoners. Freedom of religion and belief is non-existent in North Korea. If there are Christians in any community they have to practice their faith in secret. If discovered, they are subject to detention in prison camps and the crimes against them in these camps can included extra-judicial killing, forced labour and torture."

She explained why there is such intolerance towards faith: "the attitude is that there can be no religion because there can only be loyalty to the supreme leader."
