Evangelicals 'demoralised' by Melania Trump's abortion stance

by Anna Rees Green

Melania Tump has shocked evangelical supporters of her husband by declaring herself pro-choice on abortion.

In an excerpt of her new self-titled memoir, Mrs Trump states:

“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”

Melania has previously said that she identifies as a Catholic.

In a black-and-white video promoting the memoir, she looks directly down the lens of the camera, stating:  “Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard. Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to the essential right that all women possess at birth: individual freedom. My body, my choice.”

Dan Andros, Managing Editor at CBN News, told Premier Christian Radio that Melania’s comments could be a deliberate strategy for Donald Trump to win over undecided moderates: “This close to the election, it’s possible [Trump’s team] are looking at the numbers and trying to peel off some voters from the centre. Or, it’s possible this was just a dumb move, and it will irritate some people.

“I can tell you, evangelicals are not happy about it.”

Popular conservative commentator, Allie Stuckey described the move as “demoralising”, saying: “I’d vote for Trump on the immigration issue alone, and that’s still true. But let’s not pretend pro-lifers have no reason to feel frustrated.

Melania’s full memoir will be released on 8th October.
