Epsom minister 'hugely relieved' after police close 'rape' investigation

by Donna Birrell

A Methodist minister says she is "hugely relieved" after police closed an investigation into reports of a rape near her church in Surrey.

The alleged incident on 11th April happened outside Epsom Methodist Church and led to angry protests after police didn’t release the ethnicity of any suspects.

Surrey Police have now said a woman in her 20s sustained an accidental head injury and made a confused report. A statement said: “There was a lack of information in our initial appeal, particularly regarding potential persons of interest. This was because the descriptions given were vague and limited.

"We recognise this caused concern amongst the community. We are now confident that there was no offence, and there were no suspects."

Rev Catherine Hutton told BBC Local Radio she felt a “huge sense of relief for the young woman" and hoped she would find "full recovery".

The minister told Premier Christian News earlier that the protests had been “intimidating”. But she added that she hoped Epsom would now be able to "heal and move forward" with a "greater sense of community".
