Several Christian footballers named in England’s 2026 World Cup squad have been sharing messages of gratitude after head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed his 26-man selection for this summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Among them was Bukayo Saka, who posted a picture of himself in the England shirt on Instagram with the caption: “For His glory.” Fellow midfielder Eberechi Eze also shared a celebratory image wearing the national team jersey and pointing towards the sky, a gesture many Christian footballers use to reference God, while striker Ivan Toney posted a similar photograph after his inclusion was confirmed.

Saka is often mentioned alongside teammates Marc Guéhi, Eze and Toney when talking about Christian faith within the England camp. The players are often referred to as the “Bible brothers” or “God squad” circle, with reports of them praying together during tournaments and international camps.

Guéhi, the Crystal Palace defender, is the son of a pastor and attended a Church of England school. He has previously described faith as “a big part” of his life and said he hopes to “show God’s graciousness and glory” through football.

Eze has also spoken openly about the role faith has played in his career, particularly during injury setbacks. In previous interviews, he said his belief in God helps him keep perspective beyond football and reminds him there is “a deeper purpose” through difficult moments.

Toney has similarly referenced prayer as part of his match preparation and spoken about the influence of his Christian upbringing. The striker is also known for pointing to the sky after scoring goals.

Beyond this group, several other members of the England squad have been linked to Christianity or culturally Christian backgrounds, although they rarely speak publicly about religion. These include Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

England begin their World Cup campaign next month as Tuchel looks to lead the Three Lions to their first major men’s trophy since 1966.
