Elvis Presley's personal Bible from Graceland up for auction

by Lydia Davies

A Bible that once belonged to Elvis Presley, found on his nightstand when he passed away is now up for auction.

According to GWS Auctions, who's selling the item, the current bid stands at the Bible at  $30,000 (£23,569). The live auction will start on 25th May.

"The Bible is embossed with Elvis Aaron Presley in gold and contains a large amount of bookmarked pages and underlined passages that seemingly spoke to Elvis," stated the auction house in a description of the Bible.

An underlined passage is Job 31:24-26: "If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness."

Included in the auction lot is a handwritten letter from Elvis' cousin, Patsy Presley. The letter reads: "Shortly after Elvis' passing my uncle Vernon (Elvis' dad) and I went up into Elvis' bedroom at Graceland to organise and pack many of his personal belongings. This Holy Bible was one of three that Elvis had on his night table. After packing them Uncle Vernon had me take them home for safekeeping and eventually gave them to me."

Brigitte Kruse, the owner of the auction house, recently posted an image on Instagram holding the Bible. She captioned the image, "Being an auctioneer isn’t just selling stuff. Do your job, show up!"

The Bible's auction occurs amidst a challenging time for the Presley family, with the Graceland property facing foreclosure. Elvis' granddaughter, actress Riley Keough, is contesting the foreclosure, claiming the sale is fraudulent and questioning the legitimacy of loan document signatures attributed to her late mother, Lisa Marie Presley.
