Elected Labour MP says 'God has shown me favour'

Fiona Onasanya who gained the seat from the Conservatives after a recount said: "God has shown me favour.

Speaking on what motivated her to run in the first place, she explained: "I believe to be a Christian is to be Christ-like – it's to help people.

It's to see where there are needs – where people need help the most and help them do that."

The former county Councillor said that her faith will play a part in her now role as an MP and she will "definitely" be prayerful about her decisions and her constituents.

The Tory candidate Stewart Jackson was ousted by the solicitor after 12 years as MP for the constituency. Onasanya received 48.1 per cent of the vote compared to Jackson's 46.8 per cent.

Comparing herself to Esther in the Bible she said: "scripture says to go into all the world – the world isn't just a geographic world – its spheres of influence.

"So I'm going into the world of politics."
