Egypt's churches hit by fresh security fears

Coptic and Evangelical congregations in the country have scaled back their event schedules over fears they could be targeted again.

Rev Andrea Zaki, head of the Egyptian Evangelical Church, told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency church services will not be affected.

He said: "We are talking about conferences and travel for religious events, for three weeks, because we have information in cooperation with the responsible agencies that attempts to attack have been detected."

The moratorium on some activities was also confirmed by Coptic Church spokesman, Bolus Halim.

Attacks by Islamic State suicide bombers targeting three Coptic churches in Cairo, Alexandria and Tanta since December have left dozens of people dead.

IS also said it was responsible for shooting dead at least 28 Copts in Minya province in May 2017 as they travelled to a monastery.

Extremists have threatened to undertake further attacks against Christians, who comprise approximately ten per cent of Egypt's 90 million people.
