Egypt bishop: pray we would have no fear on Easter Sunday

by Aaron James

Dr Mouneer Anis is speaking as Coptic and other Christians mark the day amid restricted celebrations and tightened security.

It's a week since two Islamic State suicide bombers murdered 45 people - mostly believers - at two churches across the country on Palm Sunday.

Since then President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has instated a state of emergency giving police more powers to prevent terrorism, met with the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II, and set up a national council dedicated to fighting terrorism.

Bishop Mouneer also said the best way to tackle terrorism apart from security is education, because Egyptians committing those acts are "brainwashed" by groups like IS and need to be taught a different narrative early on.

He told Premier: "Pray for all churches, that God would protect them, and people will get rid of any fear.

"The resurrection itself of Christ took the fear from the disciples and we need to live not in the last Sunday [where 45 people died], but in this Sunday - the resurrection Sunday.

"Pray that we would work together with our brothers and sisters to combat this violence. Pray for the government, pray for wisdom. Pray that tourism would catch up again so that the people would not suffer economically, and pray that we would be keen to share the Good News."
