Donald Trump sold a signed painting of Jesus for over $2M dollars during an extravagant New Year’s Eve Party on Wednesday.

The US President rang in the New Year with an auction that included the sale of a painting of Jesus for $2.75 million (£2.04 million).

The party, held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, included an auction to raise money for local institutions and charities with proceeds from the sale of the depiction of Christ going to the town’s sheriff’s office and St. Jude’s Hospital.

Bidding opened at around $1 million, which Trump derided as “peanuts", before rising to a winning bid of $2.75 million after the president pledged to sign the painting if higher offers were made.

Several high-profile people attended the party, including New York's former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and director Brett Ratner.

The painting was created by artist Vanessa Horabuena, who was praised by Trump during the sale as “one of the greatest” artists to exist, according to The Guardian.

The President praised the Christian creative’s exceptional talent, saying that "she can paint the most incredible painting in literally 10 minutes”.
