The Bishop of Chelmsford is urging people not to take democracy for granted.
In a video for the Church of England's #PrayYourPart campaign, Rt Rev Guli Francis-Dehqani said she is "praying for all those standing for office, and involved in the campaigns. For moderation in language, for good disagreement and for kindness and gentleness.
“I’m also praying for the electorate, that we wouldn’t take for granted our democracy, but use our vote to make our views known.”
The Bishop was sharing her prayers as three weeks of prayers and reflections began across the Church of England in the lead-up to the General Election.
Written by a group of Church of England bishops, #PrayYourPart is a series of 21 daily reflections promoting prayer and participation for the election. They cover everything from prayers for party leaders, candidates and the media, through to themes such as integrity and truthfulness and key subjects including education, technology, prisons, housing, migration and the environment.
The first day's theme on 14 June was ‘Your Kingdom Come’ and encourages users to read 1 Timothy 2, 1-4.
Shortly after the date of the General Election was announced, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York said: “The coming General Election is a critical moment in the life of our nation, which will shape our future by electing those who will make decisions affecting generations to come.
“It is a time for us all – people of all faiths and of none - to ask important questions about what kind of country we want to be."
#PrayYourPart is available as a printed booklet from Church House Publishing, in audio form via smart speaker, or via daily emails. Those participating are also encouraged to share their own prayers on social media using the #PrayYourPart hashtag.
