Derby church springs into bloom with huge art installation

Holy Trinity Church has installed 175 ceramic daffodils to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

It was the idea of Vicky Scotcher, a ceramic artist. She told Premier where she got the idea: "It was the poppies at the Tower of London that inspired them.

"I actually got to see some of the poppies and thought, looking at them, I think we could have a go at making some of those."

Community 'daffodil workshops' were set up so everyone had an opportunity to make the masterpiece.

A flower will be placed for every year that the church has been part of the community bringing people together in worship, baptisms, weddings, funerals, songs of praise and summer fairs.

Each flower can also represent an individual whom someone wants to remember, celebrate or thank.

Vicky Scotcher told Premier why they decided to do this: "It's obviously celebrating the anniversary - the 175th anniversary of the church, but it's also... something that's very visual for the whole village and community to see."

She added that it should look like spring has come: "We're hoping that our church yard is going to spring into bloom with an art installation of some ceramic daffodils - there's actually 175 individual handmade daffodils that each represent one year that the church has been part of the community."
