Cornwall vicar "appalled" by parking tickets for funeral mourners

by Aaron James

Revd Daniel Reed also questioned whether there was any compassion left in society, after the fines were given out to cars parked near Helston Methodist Church.

Mr Reed also stressed that the mourners were not parked dangerously, and local car parks were full.

He told the Daily Mirror: "I'm appalled. Where is compassion these days?

"All the car parks were full so some people parked sensibly on grass verges. The cars weren't obstructing traffic."

The local minister also felt the mourners were treated unfairly, as cars are allowed to park on the grass verges for the local Flora Day without being fined.

Local councillor Andrew Wallis has said Cornwall Council has received dozens of complaints over the fines, and called the affair a "public relations disaster".

Cornwall Council has said: "If a vehicle owner considers a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) to have been issued incorrectly they can challenge it.

"In this case, the Civil Enforcement Officer was concerned that the vehicles which were parked on the verge were obstructing the footway used by pedestrians and also restricting the vision of motorists using this stretch of road.

"As a result he checked with his manager on the correct course of action and was advised to issue Penalty Charge Notices to the vehicles.

"The CEO has to enforce in a fair and consistent manner to anyone who may have contravened the restrictions. There have been issues with people parking in contravention here in the past and PCN's have been issued in these cases.

"We apologise for any distress caused to those attending the funeral but would have been willing to offer advice about parking if we had been contacted prior to the funeral."
